Welcome to Choice Of Art

Anya Ellison

I had an interest for painting since secondary school where I attended my very first art class. Having the freedom to express myself was great but I was lacking inspiration to be creative. My brother started to paint with oils at that time and I would sit for hours in front of his paintings, admiring them and studying every little detail. I could not take my eyes off of them.

There was a new art teacher at school who was very exciting and did great projects for the school interior design. He asked me and a few of my friends to help him with it (it was to paint on the walls in the school!) It was scary but exhilarating! I loved my hours spent painting on the walls, being covered in paint and feeling happy and peaceful. It was a job on a grand scale and until now I find painting on a small canvas a problem (not enough room). I am learning now to pay much more attention to detail.

I was unable to carry on with art as it was not an option when I began to study law. I could not stick with law as the rigid nature of it was not something I could get used to, so I started teaching English to children and teenagers. Being creative, when preparing for the lessons, was something that I enjoyed very much, but the lack of enthusiasm from the children to learn the language was disheartening.

Two years later I moved to England to live and found the country so beautiful it inspired me to start painting again. Previously I lived in the busy city of Kiev the capital of Ukraine, a place that was unable to provide me with enough inspiration in the way that I required. Soon after moving, I found that the nature was THE inspiration that I was so lacking, so I started painting with my friend. She taught me the things I did not know. She showed me many techniques using oil paints and this is now the paint I love to use. She helped me develop my own style of painting.

Now I enjoy the challenge. I work mostly 'wet on wet' but not exclusively.

In my work I like to express and encapsulate the changing atmosphere, the light and color of the sky onto land or water. I love to paint reflections and the effect of light. I also like to paint landscapes and anything else that catches my eye. I am working in a variety of media, from oil on canvas and oil on board to mixed media.
